The Akhal-Teke was founded in the southern part of Turkmenistan by the Teke tribe, who belonged to the Akhal Oasis. This region is pretty isolated, because of which the purity of bloodlines of the Akhal-Teke, has been maintained. The pure blooded animals, with their strength and majesty are the pride of the Teke tribe. These horses were chiefly used in the cavalry of the tribe, which is why they have infinite stamina even when faced with the harshest of conditions. The Akhal Teke is known to be a breed which can easily survive on small amount of food and water. They are also very loyal animals, and are always very suspicious of strangers. This is mainly because of the method in which these horses are groomed. The tribesmen fed these horses on small rations of heavily nutritious food, which made them strong, athletic and also very loyal to the masters, as unlike other breeds, the Akhal Teke has to depend on its master for food, as the harsh desert hardly yielded anything.
The Akhal Teke is a light and graceful horse, with a long and lean body. The Tekes have meager mane and forelock, with no feather on the legs. The coat of the Teke is very lustrous and shiny, making it look like one of the most elegant horses you will ever see. The normal height of the Akhal Teke is 15-16 hands, and the Tekes come in all colors, ranging from black, chestnut to roan, the only difference being the metallic sheen of their coats. The Akhal-Teke has a long and tapering face, very aristocratic in its countenance, with large and animated eyes, which bear a very fiery and proud look. The neck of the Teke is straight, long and thin, which are placed high on slender and angular shoulders. The chest of the horse is narrow making it easy to ride. The Akhal Teke is very intelligent, sharp and loyal animal, making it a pleasure to own one. Also the horse is famous in the equestrian arena for feats like dressage, eventing and endurance.
