The Albanian horses are small in sizes, originating from the Balkans. There are primarily two varieties of this horse, which are referred to as the Mountain variety and the Myzeqea or the variety of the plains. Due to long history of cross breeding, it is difficult to pin point the two distinctive varieties, but it is a commonly known fact that the Myzeqea is the larger one while the mountain type is smaller. The Albanian horses have a great deal of Arab blood line in them, apart from being influenced by the Tarpan, Turkmenian, and Mongolian stock.
The Albanian horses are well known for agility, even while on difficult terrain, for their strong constitution, and endurance. The modern day goals of the Albanian horse breeders are to concentrate on the number and improvement of the species. In order to improve the characteristics of the Albanian horses, many purebred Arab, Nonius, and Haflingers have been crossed with the native Albanian. This cross breeding is primarily done to overcome the inherent disadvantages of the native Albanian. For instance, the size of the horse is too small, which requires to be improved upon, in order to carry out agricultural chores. The Albanian horse, is otherwise of very good and docile temperament, and is easily amendable to all kinds of training. This amazing breed of horse is not only indispensible to the natives of Albania, but also too many horse lovers, around the world.
