Warmbloods are a group of middle-weight horses and they are also known as sport horses. There are primly bred for the purposes of use in events such as show jumping and dressage, and combined driving and eventing competitions. The ancestor of the modern Warmblood is the heavy Warmblood, which is looked after by special organizations. These original ancestor horses were much valued as driving horse and horse meant for families.
Warmbloods as a breed came to be developed because the requirement for horses as a means of transport and for agricultural work diminished after World War II. Machines replaced human hands and horses everywhere. As a result, breeds were now used primarily for events. The American Warmblood was developed for this purpose to bring out a variety that showed conformation, good gaits, excellent character, performance ability, and soundness. These horses can grow to a height of 15 to 17 hands.
If a horse had to be classified as an American Warmblood, it can come from any bloodline, provided the bloodline is of a sport horse or a Warmblood type. All horse colors are permitted here. Breeds that distinctly influence the American Warmblood are Thoroughbreds, Arabian horses and European Warmbloods.
In terms of temperament, this breed is known for being well-mannered, attentive and quick to learn. Riders will find to be highly obedient creatures, very calm and yet very focused. If you are looking for a horse that excels in traditional sport horse disciplines such as show jumping, dressage and so on, the American Warmblood is the one to opt as it will show you the results you expect in such events.
