The origin of the Ban-ei horse breed is Japan. It was mainly used in the Ban-ei Keiba races or draft races, wherein the horse had to draw a heavy sledge. This race was a competition held between farmers to ring out the endurance and stamina of their horse. They were seen to be held Hokkaido and Tohoku areas. The race track was a 200 meter course with two straight tracks and a hump.
There are three types of Ban-ei horses. These include Breton, Belgian and the Percheron. Each of these types exhibits the characteristics of their purebreds. Common colors for this breed are black, brown, chestnut and gray.
The temperament of this horse is one of calmness. Therefore, owners will find them easy to train. They are also very good enduring horses and will show expected result in high endurance tasks. It can grow to a height of 14.3 to 16.1 hands.
