One of the most popular horse breeds is the Belgian horse. It originates from the West-Brabantian region of Belgium. Actually, when it was first introduced, it was highly criticized for being too thick, too low headed, round boned and having just straight shoulders. In course of time, the breed’s temperament and disposition won over farmers and its good qualities began to be more noticed than its faults. As a result, American horse breeders decided to find a way by which its positive assets should be more highlighted than its shortcoming. This led to the modern Belgian horse.
The modern Belgian horse is huge in size with strong foot and heavy muscles. It is a powerful horse, which is why it is very much referred for draft work. They can grow to a height of 17 hands. They have the ability to pull very heavy loads and as a result it was used as a wagon horse. Its colors are mainly variations of the chestnut color and it has a flaxen mane.
Today, the Belgian horse is still considered as the most favorite draft horse and it also outnumber other breeds in this category. However, because of their stamina, they are now being used in other ways like trail riding horses, show horses and gaming horses. Recently, in the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, Colorado, two Belgian horses were able to pull an amazing 17,000 pounds. This was done over a distance of 7 ft 2 in, which goes to prove this horse strength. Those looking for a high endurance horse, one which show them the performance they expect in draft work or in heavy work competitions, the Belgian horse is the one to opt and train, as they will how expected results in such arenas.
