The horse which resembles its name closely to the pastry is quite unique but its has no connection with it it. Infact its name comes from Black forest in Germany from where its originated.
The Black Forest Horse, also called the Black Forest cold blood or Schwarzwälder Kaltblut,is a draft horse breed. This horse originated in the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. It´s a small, hardy draft horse which is suitable for the highlands with its long winters.
The distinguishable feature of this horse is dark chestnut coat with a flaxen mane and tail, a short head, strong neck, well laid back shoulders, wide croup and expansive gaits.The horse is powerfull as it weighs almost 500 kgs and the length of its hand measure 148-160 cm. Probably , this is the reason why the car power is measured in horse power. It is nimble and lively, has a good character, high fertility and is long-lived.
Some of the remarkable features of this horse are as follows:
-short and muscular neck with a clean throat-latch -the withers are set low into the musculature -sloped, powerful, and heavily muscled shoulder -short back -sloped croup with a low tail-set-deep and well rounded body -broad and deep chest -trim, strong legs clean of heavy feathering
But this horse too had a bumpy ride during its life cycle. As civilization evolved and machinery began to overtake the use of work horses, the existence of this breed became greatly endangered. However, today, the breed is no more in danger.
They are mainly used as coach horses and for riding. Their good character and gentle disposition has earned them a well-deserved role in aiding children in therapeutic riding facilities. They handsomely pull brewery wagons, wedding carriages, and carry any size rider easily through varied terrain.
