The Caspian is an amazing breed of horse that is still alive. Though a thoroughbred horse, the Caspian is only the size of a pony. The horse is extremely athletic capable of smooth movements and with a stable temperament. Because of these traits the Caspian breed gained popularity as a versatile animal and since they are natural jumpers with a sweet nature, they are considered ideal for children. Overall they can be called small horses instead of ponies.
In America and England the Caspian was mainly bred for children, as they are the finest riding companions. Their beautiful big and dark almond shaped eyes immediately attract kids towards them. They have short ears that are turned in and a good supple neck. Their nice slim body and short height makes it very easy for children to mount them. Their silky fine coat makes a nice cushiony seat.
In Iran the Caspian was mainly used for carriages and carts. Actually this breed of horse was considered extinct for thousand years until a fine American Gentleman living in Iran rediscovered it. After it was found many breeders took a proactive interest in bringing up the numbers in the breed and today it no longer faces any danger of extinction. There are several studs present in England and Britain, and a few also have been exported to Australia, New Zealand and America.
The Caspian is also ideal for the show ring because it can jump very well and is also gaining popularity in this arena. Also it is a good riding horse for the young and the adults as it is very responsive to the harness.
However all said and done the Caspian is not an easy equestrian to breed because the males ovulate only once a year and that is the only chance to breed. In spite of all these odds the breed has managed to survive, so preservation and further development is the only hope for this magnificent animal.
