The wild, Wild West like they say in the United States and it also stands good for the Cayuse which is an equestrian. The west has survived through series of hardships, with a lot of stamina and that is what this breed of horse represents. It is something that the west can call “its own”. The Cayuse Indian Pony actually originated in the northwest and it was a lot different from other Indian breeds like the Mustang and the Barb. Undoubtedly all of these breeds were sturdy and strong willed to survive any kind of difficulties. Cayuse was mainly a work horse and even its lineage like Percheron though doubtful were mainly work horses
By the 18th century the Cayuse became a popular breed because they were widely used in the west for many utilitarian purposes including riding them. The Cayuse is popular for trotting for long periods of time and that’s what makes them good riding horses, and work horses. Most of the horses used in races can run very fast at one stretch but also tire themselves out at the same time. The work horses are not the same and they can actually work all day.
Other Indian horses like the Appaloosa, Paint and Pinto are all known to be derived from the Cayuse in lineage. All these horses have a solid reputation for being work horses and not only those; they also bear other strong resemblances including the white patch on their skin. The Cayuse has found its way into the Book of American Horse Breeds and is also recognized as an American Horse Breed today. However experts claim that only a handful of these unique American horses are still existent today and some are even found outside California. Attempts are being made by the equestrian enthusiasts to revive the horse and restore its lineage to continue.
