The origins of the Connemara breed of horse is not well established, however the horse is named after a place called Connaught in Ireland. Eventually the horse was bred in several countries like Ireland, European countries, Australia and America. The horse was bred in these places so that they could use it for various equestrian activities like polo, races and even riding. The other activities where the horse was widely used were long distance riding, driving the cattle, hunting, show jumping and dressage.
The classic traits of the Connemara were it measured up to 13 to 14 hands in horse terms and came in different colors like grey, brown, black, and chestnut. These horses were considered to be very hardy yet gentle at the same time. They were very intelligent and took instructions from their master well. So this was termed as an ideal horse for kids and adults by many horse experts. The main qualities are attributed to the geographic conditions in Ireland to the rugged mountain coasts. Their hardy and agile foot is a sheer result of climbing these rugged coasts over a period of time.
The Connemara’s body is stout and well structured. It can be called a compact horse with a broad chest. These horses have a good quality of winning over the spectators instantaneously with their kind eyes and disposure. They give the rider confidence derived from its strength and posture. Today these horses are used for farming and as pets also. Horses with good temperaments sell well as pet or farm horses. Horses can be faithful, enduring and loving animals and not all breeds can be categorized to be so because some are hot headed. Among the breeds the Connemara can be called a pet because of its enduring and giving nature.
