The Djerma are actually the people of the western most tip of Niger, who also populate the adjacent areas of Burkinso Faso, Nigeria and the northern Ghana. The Djerma horse has been named after the tribes-people of these sparsely populated areas and can be found in middle Niger.
The Djerma horse is indeed one of the rarest breeds of horse as its origins are from such a fixed locality. Little, if anything is known about this breed of horse. The Djerma is known as a light horse breed and is primarily dark in colour.
The Djerma horse owes its origins to the Dongola breeds of Egypt, Eritrea and Sudan and also the African barb from the Maghreb region of Northern Africa.
