Donkeys are an offshoot of the horses but cannot be categorized as a pedigree or even far from it. Anyone can tell the difference between a donkey and a horse but the most noticeable difference however is the ears. The donkey has much longer ears than the horse. If you get down to start noting the differences you will notice several ones like the hooves, the mane, the tail, the feathers and the height and many other things that are different. Donkeys are also mostly grey or shades of grey in color. When it comes to intelligence the donkeys are much inferior to the horse and that is one of the main reasons why donkey is referred to as a dumb animal.
The size range within the breed of donkeys is quite vast and there are several different sizes from short to tall. They were not considered to be good looking animals and hence were never used for equestrian sports. They were mostly confined to the utilitarian needs of humans. In different countries the donkeys were used by various communities for their own utilitarian purposes. In countries like India and the Middle East the donkeys were much used by Laundromats who used them to carry loads of clothes to be washed. In some countries the donkeys were even used to herd cattle but not in combination with dogs as donkeys and dogs do not gel.
Today donkeys are used as farm animals and people still use it for its utilitarian value. It is good to carry heavy loads and farmers use them within a confined space like a farm to herd their sheep or sometimes pull small cartloads. In England the donkey is still the most commonly found farm animal. The donkey is also referred to as an ass in some countries.
