A draft horse is also called the dray horse in the United Kingdom. It is a big horse that can be used to carry heavy loads in farming and while ploughing. It has a strong muzzle which comes in handy for farmers while ploughing. The Draft horse also has a tolerable temperament and is a very patient animal for the most part. These were much sought after qualities in an animal like the horse by farmers in the pre industrial era. Farming was the main occupation for several people in the United States and England and the main animal used for farming were horses more than cows. There are a number of breeds of horses even within the draft horse category but almost all breeds are patient and intelligent and are human friendly.
The draft horses are also used for cross breeding because of their strength, tall figure and good muzzle to produce horses for equestrian shows. The horse breeds obtained by crossing with the draft horses have been categorized as thoroughbreds based on their usage. The draft horse can measure form 16 to 29 hands and weighs up to 2000 pounds. They have extremely strong hind legs. The draft horses are ideal for driving but many people use the horse for riding and claim that the horse can be trained for saddle. These horses are not ideal for children to ride as they stand tall and because of their strong muscular build they can scare children away.
Maintenance of a pure bred draft horse can be very expensive as compared to a farm draft horse. They usually eat a lot and because of their build they keep feeding several times a day. The draft horses need to be fed hay mostly and only 3% of their consumption consists of grains.
