The drum horse got its name from the British army because these horses were used by the British regimen and cavalry to carry a drum in the parades. These horses were used to carry two solid heavy metal drums. You can see the paintings or the pictures of such horses in children’s books even today. The drum horses measured to 16 hands in height and were considered very tall. They are strong by stature and physique that they can carry a human being along with two silver drums. These horses required to have very good characteristics like their disposition was expected to be perfect and their behavior was under constant observation. By nature these horses are considered to be steady and even tempered. In the Royal Parades even till today the drum horses are used to carry the drums and they hold a special place in Britain.
Today the drum horses are an endangered and a rare species. Only a few of them are bred elsewhere in the world. It is quite rare to come across one unless it is a royal parade even in England. It is also extremely difficult to find the original colored shire in this category. Severe efforts are being made by organizations that work for horse preservation to keep the drum horse from becoming extinct. Efforts are also being continued to breed the drum horses further and the only way to do it is by breeding two drum horses or two large gypsy horses. Sometimes even the Clydesdale is used to create the drum horses.
The Clydesdale, Shire and the gypsy horses share similar traits and all are cold blooded. All of them are also draft horses and one can bring back the drum horse by using any two of the above horses. However the most difficult thing to do would be to create the drum horse in its original color.
