The Faeroes Pony is found on the Islands of Faeroes that is situated in the North Atlantic region amid Islands of Shetland and Iceland. They are among one of the most ancient and the purest horse breeds that are currently found and as were in a remote region they have managed to remain pure in their breed.
The Faeroes Ponies are more or less like the Icelandic Pony, which is of a very old origin as well. The Faeroes Ponies also resemble the horses that were fetched from Asia to Europe somewhere around 200A.D. These horses were fetched by the Scandinavian and the Celtic settlers to the islands.
There are around seventeen islands that are occupied and also a number of reefs and islets that covers over 540 square miles. The first people to take root on these islands were the Irish monks somewhere around 700A.D. It was later occupied by the Vikings roughly around 800A.D.
The atmosphere here is quite calm and pleasant with a change in the temperature at times and the rainfall here is around 60 inches every year. The Faeroes Island has no trees naturally because of the powerful western winds and recurring windstorms.
Prior to the birth of the association for the protection of the Faeroes Ponies the number of existing Faeroes Ponies was as low and dangerous as five. The number however went up to 27 by 1988 because of the great protection pains taken by the breeders. Each and every existing Faeroes Pony was registered into the stud book and each of their blood types was recognized. These ponies were also assessed for breeding and finally 24 of them were permitted for breeding.
Majority of the Faeroes Ponies have either black or bay coats. However, sometimes some ponies also have skewbald or grey coats. At times these ponies also develop pale dun or palomino coats as well. They usually have bulky hair and they grow much heavier during winter.
