The Fell Ponies initially found in the North West fells of England. The Fell Ponies are strongly related to the Dales Ponies. The Fell Ponies are very adjustable. They can lope at a very sound pace for long distances. The early types of fell ponies were used mainly for work such as ploughing and pulling sledges they were considered very powerful. The Fell Ponies were quite huge and were thus also used for riding. The Fell Ponies were popular as a twin utility breed.
The fell Ponies are usually 14 hands tall and are just a little shorter than the Dales Ponies. They have a small head that is well defined and well positioned. They also have a wide forehead. The Fell ponies have very bright and prominent eyes. They have an average sized neck that is very sturdy. They also have broad shoulders that are well set and muscular.
The Fell Ponies have well sized legs that are very strong and muscular and have feathering at their heels. They have short cannon bone. They also have strong loins and large feet. The Fell Ponies have muscular thighs as well. The tail and the mane of a Fell Pony is very hairy and thick and also lengthy. The Fell Ponies are normally Brown, Bay, Grey or Black in color. They never have Skewbald, piebald or chestnut coats. They sometimes have a star or a tiny white mark under or on top of the back fetlock.
The Fell Ponies have a very quiet and easy-going temperament. This calm temperament makes them very good breed for riding. The Fell Ponies are also good jumpers. A large amount of Fell Ponies are also used in trekking stables as a result of their stable temperament.
