The French Saddlebred Pony is widely known all over the world by the same name, but is locally known as the Poney Francais de Selle, in France. The French Saddlebred is mainly found in the regions of Basse-Normandie, Pays-de-Loire of France. The bloodlines of the breed can be traced back to the Arab, Connemara, Welsh, New Forest and others. The French Saddlebred is essentially a pleasure mount and mainly used for amateur and professional riding. The pony is of very amicable disposition, being very easy to train and also easy to maneuver, even for novice riders. The animal is intelligent and sensitive, hence quick to understand and learn to take orders. The French Saddlebred measure 136 cm, on an average, at it’s whither. The coat color of the horse varies from black, roan, bay to chestnut. Basically all colors are permissible. The coat is meager but very shiny and lustrous. The French Saddlebred also boasts of a beautiful mane and tail which makes it a champion in the events of dressage, eventing and generally as a show horse. The croup, legs, especially the hindquarters of the horse, is superbly built, making it very easy for these horses to jump to great heights.
Today, the primary use of the French Saddlebred lies in the arenas of equestrian sports and pleasure riding. With its beautiful carriage and majestic trot, it is no wonder that it is one of the biggest crowd pullers in the dressage events of equestrian sports. The sturdy and muscular body of the French Saddlebred is the secret of its strength and stamina. The only drawback of the horse is that it is not apt as a draft animal. Hence it is of no use at all in farms and agricultural establishment. The French Saddlebred demands meticulous grooming, and though the breed is known to be resistant to disease, it is still pretty expensive to groom a French Saddlebred. This, along with its disposition, both physical and psychological, makes the French Saddlebred useful only in the arenas of sports and pleasure riding.
