The Friesian Cross is an incredible breed which owes its legacy to a number of breeds which have been inter bred to come up with the most brilliant horses. A Friesan Cross is essentially a Friesian crossed with another breed of horse. The other breed is chosen as per its characteristics, which in some way or the other, augments the characteristics of the Friesian. For instance the Warlander, which is a cross between a Friesian and an Andalusian, is a beautiful horse and one of the best known Friesian Cross. The Haute Cheval is another brilliant Friesian cross, in which a Friesian is crossed with a Lipizzan. Other splendid breeds such as the Aztec, Hispano- Arabe, Iberian Warmblood, and Spanish- Norman are great examples of what meticulous planning & research can produce. There is a prevalent confusion regarding Friesian Cross, as to this day, people are more enamored with Thorough breds than Cross breds. Though the merit of the Friesian Cross is established beyond the shadow of any doubt, there is still a lot of skepticism regarding the breed, mainly owning to the lack of awareness and information regarding the breed. The Royal Society ‘Het Fisch Paarden-Stamboek’ (FPS) is the only authority on the pure Friesian Horse. This society was founded in 1879, and has stringent rules and regulations for breeding the horses. This is quite understandable, as the Friesian had come very close to extinction, in the past.
The Friesian Cross depends on the breed with which the Friesian is bred with. However, the distinctive features of the pure Friesian like the muscular built, shiny and beautiful coat, long lustrous mane and tail, are usually retained. While buying a Friesian cross, it is absolutely imperative to make sure that both the horses are registered. The Friesian cross is most renowned for its signature trot, which makes it a winner in any dressage and eventing of equestrian sports.
