One of the most unusual kinds of horse varieties is the Groningen. This is a horse that does not exist as a pure blood today.
The origins of the Groningen breed lies in Netherlands. However, unfortunately during the 1970’s this breed was completely lost and much of it was used to breed the Dutch Warmblood. Now this is the breed which holds the typical characteristics and features of the Groningen. It was used much in draft work and as an agricultural work. Owners of this horse breed found them to be a hardy sort, with a good ability to endure and show desirable results in performance.
In terms of its physical appearance, it has a rectangular frame, muscular neck and powerful haunches. This is a horse that displayed a considerable level of stamina and endurance. It was also quite sober in temperament, however, not a very spirited horse breed. Nevertheless, it could be used in hard work and it would show good work performance. Most of the horses of this breed are black in color, with a small percentage being chestnut or grey.
What it’s more likeable about this horse is its temperament, because of which it is very easy to work with, albeit a bit stubborn. It takes little efforts for maintenance and this is why were also considered to be ideal leisure horses. They are long living and not need to be worked upon everyday to ensure that they perform well. Many people preferred this breed in earlier times because of its positive qualities.
Today, this breed does not exist except through the Dutch Warmblood. As a result, the beauty, stamina and endurance seen in a horse of this breed in its pureblood can no longer be seen today.
