The Haflinger breed is a breed of small horses that originated in Austria in the Middle East. These horses were primarily used by villagers to ride the mountain terrains, for forestry and agricultural work. This breed gets its name from the village of Hafling, which is in Italy now.
The Haflinger horse is chestnut in color, and their prominent feature is their mane and tail which is thick and double and which comes in shades of white. Their height is around 14 hands as they are fairly small horses. In spite of their small size, they can carry great weights and they are a very good help in the mountains. The main thing about these horses is that they are very people oriented and they are a delight to own, be it for trail riding or driving. These horses are mainly used as dressage horses for children because of their small size and also because of their gentle, intelligent and loving nature. They are sturdy enough to be used as mountain horses for farm work
One never really is worried when one is with a Haflinger because it is a very sincere, and a less fearful. Where the other breeds of horses would have bolted, the Halfinger horses would still be calm. These horses are very popular among the Europeans and they are increasingly being preferred in the United States as well.
One can find Haflinger horses all over the world, though majority of them are found in Austria. However there are number of farms who deal in importing and breeding of these horses. It would not be wrong to say that the Haflinger is the most preferred breed for the first timers as well as the children because of its quiet and steady nature and this is one breed of horse which you can easily trust with your children.
