The Hequ horse breed is a Chinese horse and has its origin in China. This is a very ancient breed of horse. In the earlier days Hequ was used primarily for racing and riding as well as a pack animal. This breed got its name from its location i.e. the Yellow River. The meaning of Hequ in Chinese is river zig and since this breed is located near the yellow river, the breed was thus named so.
It is a very solid and coarsely built animal with a very stout physique. One can find Hequ horses in 3 colors namely black, brown and grey. They can be as tall as 132 cms to 139 cms. The average weight of a Hequ can vary from 350-450 kgs.
A very unique thing about this breed is that this breed itself has 3 different varieties namely the Jiaode, the Suoke and the Kesheng. There are very minor differences in these 3 varieties such as the Jiaode horses are less strong than the others and are mostly in grey color, while the Suoke have large heads and ears and they have a short loin and the Kesheng is found in the Kesheng regions.
The Hequ horses are considered to be the best in terms of physique among all the Chinese horses. Because of their physique they can carry heavy loads and at the same time travel at a good speed. These horses do not get tired easily as they have great endurance and they also have the distinct quality of recovering quickly from fatigue. These characteristics make them the most preferred choice for laborious work and for use in the mountains.
As in the earlier days, even now these horses make a good choice as a racing and riding horse and are also used for a draft animal.
