The Holsteiner breed of horses is the end product of methodical breeding, over a long period of time, done in the northern province of Germany, Schleswig-Holstein. Initially the horse was cherished by the German farmers for its brute strength, stability and reliability. The German military also saw many merits like courage and agility in the breed, and considered it an asset to its cavalry. But the age of industrialization and the situation of post World War 1 Germany, designed a new role for the Holsteiner. With meticulous breeding and training, the Holsteiner has now developed into one of the finest German sporting horses. It is particularly suited for jumping and dressage equestrian events. These valuable traits were inculcated into the breed, through carefully blending English Thoroughbreds with Anglo Norman blood lines. This helped in adding elegance, grace and refinement, along with the strength necessary for jumping.
The modern Holsteiner breed of horses is of medium built and it stands sixteen to seventeen hands tall. It is empowered with strong hind legs, and a muscular back and loin, which gives it the look of regal elegance and stoic power. The arched neck of the Holsteiner rises above a well angular shoulder. The head is small, set with large and intelligent eyes. The conformation of the Holsteiner is such that they are adapted well to "self-carriage". Self carriage is the expressive and slightly exaggerated set of movements which is so essential in dressage, driving and jumping. The marvelous self carriage of the Holsteiner has made it the favorite of any equestrian show or event.
The holsteiner is also much coveted in the arena of equestrian sports. With its strong haunches providing a great amount of propulsion, the horse can leap to a great elevation. The strength of the hind quarters also allows good suspension, giving an impression of power, agility and elasticity, when it jumps.
