If you are looking for a very different type of pony variety consider the Kerry Bog Pony .One of the most distinct pony varieties is the Kerry Bog Pony. It’s look much like an Arabian horse, with a sort of curved face, but of course it cannot match to the majestic features of the Arabian horse as it is much smaller in size. It is usually seen in colors – Chestnut, Gray and Bay. It can reach to a height of about 10 to 11 hands.
The Kerry Bog Pony has a compact body, with a deep chest and muscular rounded shoulders. Its legs are very strong. These Ponies have excellent stamina and are quite sure-footed, which is why they are really the best for carrying a boggy train. Owners of this breed will find them to be quite intelligent. They can be quickly trained to do its tasks. They are known to be very enduring and make excellent riding horses for children. If you are looking for an ideal children’s pony, consider getting the Kerry Bog. It offers good riding comfort for small children.
This breed is from an ancient horse breed and unfortunately is now almost extinct. By the year 1994, it was seen that only 20 such ponies existed in Ireland. In earlier times, this pony was used to transport peat fuel to homes. This is a very sturdy pony breed and that is why it was used much for transporting fuel. It was also used for drought work on small farm areas as it is quite hardy. Many of the undesirable traits usually found in pony breeds are not seen in this breed.
Unfortunately, as the numbers of this breed is dwindling, you cannot see much of it. It is not seen in horse events or horse competitions.
