This breed is from an ancient horse breed and unfortunately is now almost extinct. By the year 1994, it was seen that only 20 such ponies existed in Ireland. In earlier times, this pony was used to transport peat fuel to homes. This is a very sturdy pony breed and that is why it was used much for transporting fuel. It was also used for drought work on small farm areas as it is quite hardy. Many of the undesirable traits usually found in pony breeds are not seen in this breed.

Unfortunately, as the numbers of this breed is dwindling, you cannot see much of it. It is not seen in horse events or horse competitions.
