Many exotic horse breed have disappeared today because of unfortunate cross breeding and negligence. Though attempts have been made by breeders to reverse this problem, still some breeds have become totally extinct. One such breed is the Kiso.
The Kiso is a breed that is of Japanese origin. While many of the horse breeds that we see today are of European origin, this one stands out because it has an oriental origin. It is believed that these horses are descendents of the breed that inhabited the plateaus of central Asia or Mongolian grasslands.
This is a horse with considerable strength and endurance. It was used in agricultural as well as military purposes. Unfortunately, no pre-breed variety of the Kiso exists today. The reason for this is that during the Meiji period (1868-1903), when Japan had to fight against foreign powers, the Kiso was cross-bred with other larger western horses to produce much bigger and thriftier horses than the Kiso. Kiso was small in stature compared to western horses and this is why this was done. The Second World War saw a complete end to this breed.
In terms of temperament, these horses are actually a friendly lot. Owners found them to be a breed that quickly adapted to their ways and which provided a good companionship to them. They are also very intelligent, and could be taught things easily, which is why they were used in the military. Owners of this breed will be quite impressed with its strength, endurance and stamina. They can perform tasks according to expectations and they show desired performance levels.
None of the Kiso horses seen today is a pure breed, as they are all back breeds of the Dai-san Haruyama ( the last pure breed Kiso) and other Kiso descendants. As of today, the Kiso is considered to be a rare horse breed.
