The Misaki Horses were initially found in Japan. They reside in the pasture of Cape Toi that is in the south part of the Miyazaki region. Misaki literally refers to Cape. These Misaki Horses wander freely in the meadows and are hardly below any human hold. Similar to the other local Japanese horses the Misaki horse too is said to have descended from the horses that were fetched from China to Japan approximately about 2000 years back. Presently they have been divided into eight different breeds.
The Misaki breed was initially recognized in the past account in 1697. This was while the Akizuki house of Takanabe clan gathered these untamed horses and organized a group of the livestock. They managed these horses by letting them free throughout the year and then gathered them once a year apparently to choose the horses for training and also to keep a watch on their physical health and eunuch males that were unfit for reproduction. The similar structure is follow at present as well where the horses are amassed together once a year and are vaccinated.
After the World War II the number of the Misaki horses decreased radically and currently there are just around a hundred of them. Thus it is categorized as an endangered breed. However it is being maintained. The Misaki horses are considered as the National Natural Treasure and thus it has become a center of attraction of tourism.
The Misaki Horses are of the height of ponies and usually are around 12.2 to 13.2 hands tall. But these horses have the features and proportions of a horse. They normally have black or bay coats but sometimes also come in chestnut. A few of them also have white markings.
