The Miyako Horses are a very rare breed of horses and were originally found in the Miyako Islands in Japan. It is one of the eight native horse breeds of Japan. The Miyako horses are said to have been existing at least from the 13th century. The Miyako Island that is situated in the Okinawa region is popular as a horse breeding region for many centuries and several small horses have been living in this region.
The Miyako Horses were more often used for riding and also for draft work in farms and transportation on the Island. Since they have a very gentle temperament they are used for riding. As it is now an endangered breed it is in limited used. The Miyako Horses look a lot like the Mongolian horses, actually a bit smaller and has similar body structure and appearance.
The Miyako horses were found in large number about 10,000 in 1955. However their number began to decline as a result of growth of motorization. Immense attempts were made from the year 1975 to protect the Miyako breed. The number started decreasing drastically and there were only about eleven Miyako horses existing. Thus it is now an endangered breed.
The Miyako horses were originally 11 hands tall. But at the time of the World War II and later, they were paired with other larger breeds and thus their size increased up to 14 hands. However attempts are now being made to restore the original size of these horses. The Miyako horses generally have dun or bay coats.
