The breed of New Kirgiz horses were developed in Russia, in the state and collective farms of Kirgiz. It was done by crossing local breeds of horses with the Thoroughbreds. This resulted in a breed which was well adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the highlands of Kirgiz. The horses were muscular, and of sturdy built which helped them to serve as draft animals. Though built sturdily, the Kirgiz is of short stature which makes it look particularly like the Don horses. The New Kirgiz is also well known for its meat and dairy production, for which it is abundantly used. A mare is known to produce up to 20 liters of milk. These horses are the mainstay of the population, especially during the harsh winter months.
The average height of a New Kirgiz stallion, at the withers is 156cm, the body length being 158 cm. the chest girth is 188cm, which adds to the endurance level of this animal. The horse is characterized by a medium-sized and well demarcated head which is set on a low neck. The horse has distinct withers, a straight and uniform back, along with a heavily muscled croup. These features make the New Kirgiz a very good mount. The fame of the breed lies in its speed and agility. The animals are very sure footed and can be depended on when traversing particularly treacherous terrain. The New Kirgiz is also gifted with a pleasant temperament, making it easy to work with and breed. The horse doesn’t demand a long, as far as maintenance goes, so it is a particular favorite amongst the farmers and workers of the region.
