Nez Perce Indians were the natives of northwestern America, and they were essentially fisherman until the horses came into the scene. The Nez Perce breed was formed by cross breeding two breeds namely the Appaloosa and Akhal-Teke. The Akhal-Teke is known to have originated from Central Asia. The resultant breed was one with immense endurance, intelligence and excellent character. This horse, in short, changed the lives of the Nez Perce tribe, forever. The horses, with their insurmountable speed became indispensable in hunting. The tribe could now go out hunting the buffalos which were then abundant in these parts. The Native Indians soon became famous for their hunting skills and a large amount of this fame owned to the Nez Perce horses. The horse also aided the tribe to promote trade and services, which further enhanced the prosperity of its people.
The Native Indians did not underestimate the importance of this horse and therefore had strict guidelines of breeding. These horses were famous for their sure footedness, survival instincts and also speed. The Nez Perce horses inherited the patterned coat from the Appaloosa. Some horses however have solid colors as well. The Nez Perce were mainly bred to work as mounts during hunts, and hence extra care was taken by the Native Indians to make the tail and the mane short, so that it didn’t get caught in the brush. The Nez Perce horses are also gifted with a very muscular body and strong hindquarters, which makes it an amazing runner and also allows it to leap over any obstacle, that it faces.
But with the fall of the tribe the horse also came very close to extinction. Indiscriminate breeding led to the decline of many of its prized traits. In 1995, under the Government of the state of Idaho, a program was launched which aimed at restoring the Nez Perce horses to its former glory. With spreading awareness, many non profit outfits have also joined the movement, thereby reinstating this marvelous breed of horses.
