The Nokota horses have its origin in North America and these horses are of Spanish Descent that used to roam the Little Missouri badlands in North Dakota.
In 1947 a national park called the Theodore National park was established and many Nokota horses were shifted here. People of those times considered these horses to be an unwanted nuisance and therefore caught them and sold them to slaughter horses as well. There were two types of Nokota horses at that time namely the traditional ones and the ranch ones. The traditional type has the bloodlines of the original Nokota horse while the ranch type is much taller.
The Nokota horses are very good for three day event sports, dressage, reining and gaming on account of their versatility. These horses are apt as ranch horses, which are easy to ride and drive. These horses have the characteristics to go anywhere, and do anything. The Nokota horses are said to be very kind as well as brave and reliable. They are very intelligent and also very athletic. The main colors that these horses are found are blue roan, gray, chestnut, and brown. Apart from this the Nokota horses are believed to have great stamina. The average height of the Nokota horses is around 14 to 15 hands. In the open ranch days the Nokota horses were favored enough to the extent that the ranchers tried and crossed Spanish and native stallions to continue getting horses of that kind of stamina and agility which the Nokota horses had.
The Nokota horses are a pleasure to own because they do not require much care as they tend to be very loyal to the owners who treat them with trust and respect. Lot of care is now taken by the Nokota Horse Conservancy for the conservation of the Nokota horses.
