The Noma horse has its origin in Noma County, Japan and is said to have originated in the 17th century from the Mongolian stock. There are only 8 breeds of Japanese horses that are recognized and the Noma horse breed is one of them. The Noma horse is a very rare horse breed. In the olden days these horses were used as packhorses to cart the crops over the steep mountain paths and they were also used on remote islands.
These Noma horses are the smallest among all Japanese horses and their average height is around 10-10.3 hands. Due to their small they can as well be classified as ponies. The Noma horses are said to be very strong, and very patient. They are the best choice for use as a child’s horse because of the small size as well as the patience. They can also be used as a light pack horse. The Noma horses can be found in different colors such as brown, chestnut, cremello, roan and bay. Now days the Noma horses are just being used for riding for the children. The local schools also use them to conduct studies.
The Noma breed is very less today and it is believed that there are just around 27 Noma horses that can be found. There was a point in time when there were only 6 of them but thankfully over a period of time they have increased to the current number. If not taken care of properly there are chances of the numbers going down again.
Since these horses are so scarce and low in number they are just being preserved as local heritage as it becomes very important to preserve such a rare breed of horses. This is the reason why they are so protected and under lot of supervision.
