Many ancient rare hose breeds are much prized today, because they have qualities unlike any modern horse breeds. Most of them are very adept horses, energetic and calm in temperament, because of which they can be easily trained. One of the most interesting rare horse breeds is the Nooitgedacht Pony.

Nooitgedacht pony is an ancient rare breed of horse found in South Africa. Nooitgedacht pony is a descendant of the Basuto Pony.

As mentioned earlier, the Nooitgedacht Ponies were developed from Basuto type ponies as there were requirements in the agricultural activities of South Africa. Several research activities and projects were undertaken to improve this breed.

There were many constraints and considerations in the breeding process and a methodical breeding process was adopted to develop a uniform type of breed of horse that is suitable for the South African region for agricultural activities. The Nooitgedacht Breeders' Association was initiated in 1968 to establish the breed. This association was also responsible for setting up breeding standards that were used as guidelines for the breeders and judges at horse shows. Finally, in the year of 1976, the Nooitgedacht Pony was registered as “South Africa's first indigenous pony breed” in the South African Stud Book Association.

Nooitgedacht ponies have a compact built with a short back and sloping shoulder. These horses are very intelligent, and tamed. They are extremely hard formed with a good bone composition, joints, and strong hooves. They appear in bay, brown and chestnut roan colors. They are very tall, the height ranging between 13.2 (138 cm) and 15 (153 cm) hands high.

Nooitgedacht pony is a very good entertainer and are used in the following areas:

• Gymkhana

• Polo

• Endurance riding

• Hacking

They are also good jumpers, and used as a show horse. As they possess excellent stamina, they are suitable for horse riding by all age groups.
