One of the most interesting aspects about horses is that there are so many different breeds in them. Each breed is untie and have distinct qualities and characteristics for which they are much prized and valued. One such distinct horse breed is the Nordland horse.
There lies a wide speculation about the origination of Nordland horses. According to the researchers these types of horses came into Norway during very early times and this breed was almost vanished after World War II. This breed became spread across in different areas due to environmental conditions in Norway and this pony was called by different names in each areas. There is also some belief among the researchers that Nordland horse is a combination of two different types of horse within the same race the Lyngen in Troms and the other type from within Nordland.
Nordland horses are the smallest among the three Norwegian horses. These horses resemble the same size as similar to Icelandic horse. The colour of the coat may be chestnut, brown or black. These horses are included in the UN list of endangered species and it is considered to be one of the world’s least known breeds of horse.
Nordland horses are good in temper and is said to be undemanding when it comes to fodder and pastures. These horses are extremely powerful and they are exceptionally adaptable. Nordland horses are used for all kinds of riding and driving. This is a best fit family horse because of its friendly temperament.
In the 60s and 70s when the tractor was replaced for the farm horse these horses came close to extinction but however a few horses that were left was saved by some enthusiasts and they started a project that seems to have saved the breed.
