Many horse breeders are known to prefer ancient horse breeds because such breeds possess a stamina and intelligence like no other. These horses are also very sturdy and show considerable endurance. They can be easily trained and they also have a long life. One such horse breed is the Noric horse.
Noric is an ancient breed of horse developed in the Alpine piedmount regions of Austria. They are also known as Norikers.
The Austrian Norics are bred based on Volcano, Nero, Diamand, Schaunitz, Elmar. Thanks to the archbishops of Salzburg who initiated and improved the breeding of Norics!
The Norics appear in black, bay, and chestnut color. Some population of the Norics appears in brown, red, and roan colors because of cross-breeding with the Mediterranean breeds of horses.
They have the following measurements (in cms):
Norics Height Chest girth Cannon bone girth
Stallions 155 205-215 23-25
These measurements are ideal for the horses to be suitable as a commercial horse.
Norics have excellent endurance, rugged nature, tough personality as well as tame nature. Norics also exhibit excellent balancing and climbing capabilities.
The ideal combination of toughness, strength, and balancing capabilities, the Norics are best suited for agricultural and other activities in the rough environment of the Alpine forests. Norics are considered as the best ecological and economical work horses that serve as an ideal companion for knights, farmers, and merchants. Norics are also used extensively as draft and pack animal in the mountainous regions.
Apart from forestry, Norics are widely used in the following areas:
• Sports activities
• Carriage driving courses
• Horse skidding courses
• Sledging
• Riding
• Driving
It is a disappointing factor that this breed of horse is becoming extinct gradually, and it is the responsibility of the respective Government to develop the breed.
