Horses of this breed have a thick neck, flowing mane, deep chest, muscular sloping shoulders, muscular withers, wide back, short legs and solid hoofs. In terms of temperament they are quite docile and easy to handle. They have good stamina levels and are very energetic horses.

Common colors of the horse are Black, Chestnut, Yellowish Black, Blackish Brown, Brown, Grey, Buckskin, Palomino and Smoky. They also have markings on their head and the legs. They can grow to a height of about 15 to 15.2 hands. This horse was much valued for durability and energy. They will show expected performance levels in the work for which they are used.

In Sweden the North Swedish Horse is sued a lot in farming and forestry. Cross breeding of this horses with the Dole breed has create a bred that is used as harness racing, a Scandinavian sport.
