The origin of Palomino horses is said to be in China, however it is believed that it first came to United States from Spain. This is a very treasured horse breed that is said to be a part of the Greek mythology. It was a horse chosen by ancient emperors and it was the pride of Queen Isabella. It is said that though the Queen owned 100s of these horses, she would not allow the common man to own even one. Because of this Queen even today these horses are sometimes called as Ysabella, in Spain. These horses were also used as saddle horses by the cowboys.
This breed is generally golden in color, which makes them very unique and their average height is between 14-17 hands and the average weight is about 500 kgs. The colors of these horses are predominantly gray, black or brown, while their mane and tail is mostly white.
There are 3 types of Palominos that are found namely the stock type, the Golden American Saddle bred and the pleasure types. These horses can be used for different purposes such as racing, pleasure riding, shows, rodeos, ranching and other such activities. The basic characteristic of this horse is that it is very alert and despite being fiery it adjusts nicely with the people. The Palominos are a real beauty that has great endurance, maneuverability and versatility. Their unusual color makes them a centre of attraction in the show rings, and also makes them very much in demand for television and movies.
Palomino horses are said to be the finest breeds. Hence the Palomino Horse Breeders Of America, Inc was formed in California in 1930 for preserving and improving the breed of this horse. Gradually various branches of this association were formed in different parts of United States.
