A pony is basically a small horse and not a baby horse. These horses never grow and they would just remain small throughout their life. One can find many different breeds of ponies namely Camargue pony, Connemara, Fjjord, Dales Pony, Fell pony, Haflinger, Exmoor pony, Dartmoor Pony, Highland pony, Icelandic pony, Shetland pony etc. Out of these Shetland pony is the smallest whereas the Connemara is comparatively a larger pony.
The average height of a pony is less than 14.2 hands, though some of them would be as small as 12.2 hands but definitely not taller than 14.2 hands. In spite of their small size the ponies they are known to have good stamina and sure footedness. These are also very friendly and intelligent animals. These make very good riding mounts for children and these can be ridden by adults as well as the ponies are said to be quite strong and they can carry equal weight that a draft horse can carry.
In the olden days the smaller horses were bred and used for domestic purposes. They were also used for driving and transporting freight. But these days the ponies can be seen in various sports events. Some specific ponies are more preferred to driving while some are more apt for riding. For instance Camargue ponies are very good saddle horses, while the Connemara, Fell and Haflinger ponies make excellent riding ponies. Apart from this, in some parts of the world the ponies are still used for pulling vehicles, and as working animals.
Pony breeds can be found all over the world as they are a good choice when it comes to working in harsh climates and for doing hard work. There are certain breeds of ponies now like Dales and Dartmoor ponies that need protection and preservation and there are various organizations also taking care of this.
