The Pottock breed is a mountain breed and has its origin in the Basque province of France- Spain border. It is an ancient breed of small horse and it is believed that the ancestors of these horses are the Solutre horses; however the pottock horses are also said to have an Arab influence. The Pottock horses are assumed to be semi wild, but they still are an important part of the Basque life. They are now found in almost all parts of France.
There are mainly three types of the Pottock horses namely Standard pottock, Double Pottock and the Pinto Pottock. In the olden days these horses were used for working in the mines and for pack and light draft work but off late they have gained more acceptance as riding as well as competition horses.
The Pottock breed is a tough horse, but it is also gentle. These horses although wild, are calm and willing. The Pottock horses are strong with a very easy going and good natured temperament. They have great endurance. The average height of the Standard and Pinto Pottock is around 11.1 to 13 hands, while the Double Pottock is slightly larger and its height is around 12.3 – 14.2 hands. The main colors of the Pottock horses are chestnut, pinto, brown and bay.
The Pottock horses have great jumping ability and therefore are used in competitions. They are also good for dressage events. These horses are also in demand for riding as well. Due to their calm disposition the Pottock horses are favored as children’s ponies. They also make very good harness animals.
Though the Pottock horses are semi wild, most of them have owners. Tradition is that they are gathered in January on the last Wednesday, branded and sold. Sometimes they are just returned to the hills as breeding stock.
