Horses that do not perform on race tracks and shows are beasts of burden. They remain so distinguished due to their light weight disposition and easily submissive to any of man’s whims. Qatgani is a horse breed of Afghanistan and is mainly used for light riding and for carrying light weights. Although all light weight horses have their antecedent in the Middle East, the Afghanistan variety is capable of moving around in harsh mountainous terrain and making steep climbs. This proved to be very advantageous in Afghanistan which had very few flat areas.
The Qatgani has not been studied in details by equine experts as Afghanistan was mostly an inaccessible place due to extremes of climate and the people leading a plain and nomadic life. Another reason perhaps it remained so was that the Qatgani Horse never gave that uniqueness, charm and stocky appearance that most equine owner sought. The horse was also easily domesticated and has remained so since long past. There were no wild varieties or wild cousins for this breed either. They always remained the docile creature trained and used for light agriculture works, heavy and light carriage and road work or retained simply as pets. The horses never appeared for any horse races or other public appearance for their lack of speed or good gait. They were best made use of transporting people or goods and merchandise in the rugged terrains of Afghanistan.
Qatgani as a horse breed is not uncommon although there were no associations to look after its wellbeing as Afghanistan remained more or less cut off from the civilized part of the world. There were no concerted efforts to cross breed the specie with that of other horses due the fact that it was a light weight horse. However, its inbuilt stamina for climbing and doing hard work has made it a good companion to its keepers in Afghanistan.
