The origin of the Russian Don horses can be traced to the area near the Don and Volga rivers in Soviet Union. This horse gets its name because of the region where it is bred namely the Don River. The Russian Don horses were very small horses, but after the cross breeding of these horses with horses like Persian Arabs and Karabakh breeds, Orlov Trotter and Thoroughbred they are much larger.
In ancient times the Russian Don used to roam in herds and was used as cavalry horses for Cossacks, whereas in recent years, it is being used as a saddle horse. These horses were highly appreciated in the army as they could cover long distances in very short time and still be energetic enough for a battle. The exceptional quality of these horses was very well known all over the continent.
The average height of the Russian Don is 15.1- 16 hands. These horses can be found in colors such as chestnut, gray, black and brown. One of the main characteristics of this horse is its stamina and endurance. These horses are said to be able to survive equally well under freezing winters as well as searing heat. It is a very undemanding horse with an even temperament. The Russian Don proves to be very good in harness as well as for riding. They make good competition jumpers and steeple chasers.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, this breed also bore the brunt and there were only a few of these precious mares and stallions that survived. However, now the breeding of the Russian Don horses has begun and this breed is gradually bouncing back. Admirers of this breed are also making a contribution to this effect because they realize that its exceptional qualities are a true gift to be valued and treasured.
