Soviet Union is said to be the origin of the Russian Heavy draft horse. This horse is a cross bred of the Russian mares and warm blood as well as draft horses like the Orlov Trotter and Percheron.
The Russian Heavy draft is well known for its capacity for producing milk. The mares of this breed are said to produce as much as 25000 kg of milk. Since these horses have a good fertility and they live longer, they can be used for 25 years. The Russian heavy draft horses are usually short and muscular with light feathers. These horses are very good for rough terrains as they are very agile and energetic. They are also said to be very docile. The key feature of this breed is that they can pull more weight than any other breed of the soviet period. Apart from this the Russian Heavy draft is also very tolerant of cold.
The Russian heavy draft horses are very strong, but they are relatively small and their average height is 14.2-14.3 hands. The live weight of a stallion is 600-700 kg while that of mares is 500-600 kg. They have short legs, too. Some of the colors of these horses are chestnut, rare brown, strawberry roan or bay and they are very attractive. These horses are very widespread because of their high adaptability and because of their capability to help in agricultural chores. Also, the Russian heavy draft horses were used in improving agricultural stock. This is one of the reasons for them being very popular. Many of these horses are still used for pulling carts in the countryside. They are very economical to feed and maintain.
The Russian Heavy Draft horses have become very widespread and can be found in Ukraine, North Caucasus, Udmurtia, Byelorussia and in Western Siberia.
