One of the purest and the oldest of the warm blood breeds is the Trakehner breed. It originated from East Prussia which is now a part of Russia. The Russian Trakehner horses were primarily used as remounts in the Russian cavalry. The Russian Trakehner horses have the best qualities of Thoroughbred horses and therefore are very courageous.
The Russian Trakehner horses are known for their beauty, intelligence and power. They have a very ideal temperament and are very alert and level headed. These horses are very athletic, very willing to please and also very easy to train. They have the ability to take intense work. These horses have natural elegance and are docile. Because of these qualities these horses make good competition horses. They feature in almost all equestrian disciplines like show jumping, long distance running, driving events etc. and are extremely successful in sports; however they are known to excel in dressage events. These horses demonstrate more stamina than the other warm bloods. The Russian Trakehner horses are however much lighter than the other warm bloods. Their average height is 16 to 17.2 hands and they can be found in any color.
While breeding the Russian Trakehner horses, lot of care is taken for its performance, trainability etc. These horses were used to refine the other breeds and the same is still being followed. History has it that the Trakehner horses were almost over during the World War II. But somehow the breed that was at strength of 800 horses, managed to evade extinction with less than 100 horses alive at the end of the war. Due to a reduction in the number of Russian Trakehner horses, efforts were made to re-established the breed in the next decade itself
Anyone who has owned a Russian Trakehner will just want another one because these horses are very addictive and pleasure to own.
