Ever since Human civilization began, Man had bred livestock for commercial reasons and a source of income for his livelihood only. Thus, to get the best of the livestock Man did his level best to get the most suitable and economically viable livestock breed to support himself, his family and his near and dear. The Russian Trotter Horse was one such breed bred for the very main intention of earning money and prestige for the Russian aristocrats. The Russian Trotter was developed in Russia for the purpose of racing and other sports competition. There were other horses in Russia for this purpose, yet they couldn’t perform so satisfactorily and energetically in the sports arena. Naturally enough the attention turned to the US which had several horses within its hold solely for the purpose of speed racing. In 1890 and 1914 standard bred stallions were brought from US and crossed with the then Russian Orlov Trotter. Initially, this idea didn’t produce the intended results and most of the horses that were bred turned very weak and were of low quality. But the experts and hard to die breeders persisted with this experience for some time and soon enough a faster and more accurate popular variety was produced and became known as the Russian Trotter Horse.
The Russian Trotter Horse stood at heights of 15.3 to 16 hh with a girth of 6ft and 1inch. Its bone measurement below the knee was on the average 7.75 inches. The Russian Trotter Horse has a plain head, long and muscular neck, long and sloping shoulders. Again, the chest had a width wide enough and deep. The legs were strong and the horses had clearly defined tendons. It came in usually bay color, but was available in color of chestnut, black or grey. They were easy to train and displayed great energy and speed of a real racing horse.
