All horses were bred for the purpose of commerce and livelihood especially during older days. Some were bred for the purpose of riding through thick forest s and rough terrains, some served during the wars, some were used for agricultural purpose, some for hunting, chasing, and trialing and transporting, others were solely for the purpose of sports and entertainment while some were slaughtered and eaten. The Sanhe horse, known for its muscular strength and stamina, was mainly used for carting over roughest of mountainous terrains of the world.
The Sanhe Horse had its origin in Mongolia from where over time it spread to the rest of the world. The breed was not an original of a wild horse, but was developed in 1960s by subsequent crossing with Russian thorough bred called Akkal- Toke and those of the native Mongolian variety and so also with Chinese Mongolian breeds. Much Later the Kabarda and Don were introduced. It was during d1904 and 1905 that the Russian variety Zabaikal were brought through Baikal and crossed with local breed. Later on the Japanese started a stud farm. In course of time, several crosses of all these specie including, Anglo-Arab, Arabian thorough bred, American Trotter and Chitran horses. In 1955 the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China made an overall assessment of the crossbred horses of that area. Later taking the selected breeds they established two stud farms to develop a unique breed that came to be known as the Sanhe Horse. In Chinese, the word meant three rivers which is descriptive of the region with a large basin.
The Sanhe Horses were muscular horses with well made sloping shoulders and strong joints and muscling typical of Chinese breeds. They came mostly in chestnut or bay and were tough and strong. Thus, their main objective was for riding and carting through undulating areas and mountains.
