The Schleswiger Heavy Draft Horse as the name itself suggests is indeed a heavy breed. The stallion males of this specie are conspicuously larger and heavier than the mares of the same specie. It has its origin in North of Germany and was earlier and even to this day used as a working horse. Unfortunately, with the progress and advancement made in the field of agriculture, its demand fell sharply and with it its population too underwent significant reduction. It is presently listed as an endangered domestic animal in the official list of the society for the protection of old domestic animal breeds.
Schleswiger Heavy Draft Horse is all in all a toiling horse with enough of strength and stamina to toil and work in the agricultural fields of Germany. It is short, muscular and heavy animal made for such hard work and stands on the average height of 154 to 162cms. Its kegs are strong, dry and lightly feathered making it a beautiful sight for tourists and vacationers from other countries. Its round hooves, another mark of this specie, are of good quality. Besides, it’s short and muscular back is well suited for heavy loads and its head too is short and straight with broad forehead. The neck of Schleswiger Heavy Draft Horse is well proportioned to the other parts of its body. It is mostly found in chestnut color, black grey and bay ochre. It is an excellent mover with a agile speed for walking and trotting that might astonish an onlooker. Also unlike other horse specie it is noticed that it never ever faces any feeding problems and is less fussy about food. This makes it indeed an ideal domestic animal for farmers and owners of plantations.
Although very few surviving specie of this animal is found, but efforts are on to increase their numbers by shifting their work and making them as a useful means of pulling covered wagons for tourist and sightseers and for entertainment purpose.
