The Shire horse is believed to be one of Britain’s excellent draft horses. They are the tallest breed among all the current draft horses and is said to be the descended from the Great Horse that was fetched to Britain in 1066. The Shire breed of horses has gone through various changes in their names. Initially it was known as the Black Horse and later it was known as the English Cart Horse and presently it is called the Shire Horse. Due to the arrival of mechanization, the number of Shire horses decreased immensely. However the number has again gotten to climb at present.
The Shire Horses are very popular for their massive size and great power. They possess a finely balanced head and also a pair of large pleasant eyes. They also have a well sized nose and ears. Their nose is faintly arched outwards. The Shire horses have a lengthy neck that is powerfully built. They have wide withers and back that are also extremely powerful. Their hindquarters are also strong and curvy. The Shire breed of horses has big joints and also lengthy legs. Their tail is position low and they have thick mane and tail. They have angled and strong shoulders as well. They own large and strong hooves and their legs are thickly feathered at the bottom.
The Shire Horses usually are 16.2 to 17.2 hands high and weigh around 910 to 1120 kg. They normally come in black, bay, brown or grey colors. They were initially used to draw carts and used by brewers to carry beer wagons from the brewery to the community houses. This practice still fairly prevails in England. It is also used in working in land as well as forest. They are also used in plowing and weight pulling competitions.
