The Sorraia breed of horse is a native horse of Portugal. They were initially found in the plains amidst the Sor and the Raia rivers of Portugal and thus they are known as the Sorraia horses. The Sorraia horses were mainly used for working on farms, for light harness work, riding and for herding. They were commonly used by the shepherds and the cattlemen. They were used by the native cowboys for light farming work.
The Sorraia horses are capable of holding up to harsh climates. They are especially used to very hot and dry climate. They are also capable of surviving healthily without much fodder. This strong and enduring nature of the Sorraia horses made them very important to the stockmen. They possess lengthy legs and thus are considered as a small horse and not a pony. The Sorraia horses are currently almost extinct. Only a few of them are now found in a few places in Spain and Germany.
The Sorraia horses have a large head and also have large and bright eyes that appear very calm. The posses very attentive ears and have a lengthy and slender neck. They have straight shoulders that make their gait rather short. Their back is short but very powerful. They have lean and angled hindquarters. The Sorraia horses have lengthy and thin legs. They grow up having a broad chest and a full girth. They have a slightly low positioned tail and the tail as well as their mane is quite dense.
The Sorraia horses are around 14 to 15 hands tall. They have either dun or grulla coats. They are very strong and powerful but have a quiet and mild temperament. They can be considered as all-round horses.
