For the purpose of registering animal specie and for their better understanding Man had segregated them in different categories and registers. This, not only makes him aware of the distinctiveness of a particular breed, but also gives him recorded details of their history, availability, geographical area of their habitat and their distribution of genes through cross breeding. The Spotted Mountain Horse is a variety of Kentucky Mountain Saddle horse for the purpose of registration. It is their spotted white coloring that distinguishes a Kentucky Saddle Horse from that of the Spotted Mountain Horse. Thus, the Spotted Mountain Horse is the breed having white coloring of 36% or more on its face, legs, mane or tail over the existing predominant color over its body which could be of any color. If the white coloring is less than 36% then it is deemed to be the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse (KMSHA).
The Spotted Mountain Horse or the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse for the purpose of registration in their respective registry must be medium bone, athletic and refined. Their body is usually compact, close coupled and well muscled. They have cob-sized head with a straight profile and broad forehead. Neck is of medium thickness and length and withers are flat. It is markedly seen to have a natural four beat gait called an amble or rack. In fact, a rider on the saddle is seen to be stationary while the horse speeds away. This makes it the most ideal horse for the purpose that its rider hardly experiences any discomfort nor is thrown away from the saddle. Again it behaves very calmly and soothingly at most occasions. This has made the specie a very highly prized animal among the equine owners. The height of this horse is d11 hands or more. Another thing for the purpose of registry, the foals or lambs of either KMSHA or SMHA registry are given only temporary registration until they are grown up. Later they are permanently registered after ascertaining the area of white spot on their body.
