The Standard bred horses was first founded in 1788. These horses are descendants of the Thoroughbred. These horses were developed in North America. They were originally used for riding and plowing the fields, but gradually they were developed as competition horses, primarily for racing.
The Standard bred horses are capable of doing any job. Though they look very plain, they are very robust as well as rugged. These are medium build horses, with an average height of 14.2-17.2 hands and a weight of 900-1200 pounds. The common colors of the Standard bred horses are bay, brown, black and chestnut. However occasionally there are horses in grey color also.
One of the most important features of this breed is that these horses are said to be bombproof i.e. even in the midst of mock battles, they don’t lose their equilibrium. The Standard bred horses are very steady and have great stamina. Due to these qualities these horses are most preferred by Civil War reenactment groups.
Though this horse is most widely used as a riding horse, it has the capability of doing well even in hunt seat, show jumping, reining, and eventing as also in dressage. There is an estimated population of over 30 million people who are attracted to standard bred racing. The American Standard bred horses are the fastest harness horses and the most popular breed for trotting/pacing. These horses are also widely used for movies as they are very easy to train. These horses are willing to most of the jobs and they love human companionship. The Standard bred horses can be very good family horses, too. They can be used for trail riding and as ranch horses also.
Apart from this, the Standard bred horses are also used for improving other breeds of horses such as the Orlov Trotter and French Trotter.
