The Suffolk horses originated from the Suffolk and Norfolk counties. This breed was primarily created for use in agriculture. It is the oldest breed of heavy horse that exists in Great Britain.
The Suffolk horses are large and symmetrical and they are all of the same color and type. The average height of a Suffolk horse is 16.1-17 hands. These horses have a very easy temperament. They have a great willingness to work and a special quality known as “Heart” i.e. the inner determination to push on. The Suffolk horses can be seen only in chestnut colors; with shades such as bright, golden, yellow, dull dark etc. some horses have white hair mixed with the chestnut while sometimes one can find a star, stripe or a blaze on their body. This breed is very easy to take care of, has an exceptionally good and long life and is very economical, too. The Suffolk horses were mainly used to plow the heavy clay soil, mainly because these horses were powerful had lot of stamina and good health to do this kind of work.
However the Suffolk horses do not reproduce easily due to the fact that they are seasonal breeders, and the situation at present is such that there are only around 75 breeding female horses in the breed. There was a time around 1966 when this breed was nearing extinction. At that time a Society was formed for its preservation and with the help of new breeders, the number of Suffolk horses has gone up.
Most of the horses were used by the farmers for their farm work and hence these horses were never sold outside. But over the years, the Suffolk horses have moved towards the country from their native land. There are several shows that are held for the Suffolk horses.
