It has been proved by geologists and scientists that horses never existed in Japan during the Paleolithic, Mesolithic or Neolithic periods. .It has also been proved that all Japanese breed of horses were brought to shore from the Asian continent. This has been done throughout the history of Japan and these animals later on adapted to the particular environment of a particular region. During the ancient times, horses were widely used for warfare in ancient Japan. Horsemanship was a definitely an added qualification for an army man to go up in rank. The Samurai warrior always rode on horse back as a mark of prestige. In Japanese religion too horse especially white ones were a mark of reverence. The Taishuh Horse originated in Tzu island of Japan and was mainly used for riding and light draft. This ancient breed dated back to the eighth century was a docile creature, gentle in behavior and had strong willingness to obey. They were thus ridden mostly by farmers, wives and children. Their color was of bay, cremello, chestnut,roan and brown. Some Taishuh Horses have black dorsal stripe on their body. They are presently under the protection of the Animal Husbandry Centre of Hokkaido. This was due to their population having been reduced from 4000 in 1920 to only around 65 at present. A sperm bank and an ova bank have been created in the premises for artificial insemination and breeding.
The Taishuh Horse is a strong rugged animal with sturdy legs. They have a fairly large head which they always hold horizontally. Like all other Japanese horses they are small in appearance. Their average height is less than 14.2 hands. Since they are always of gentle nature they can be handled and rode by even novices. In fact, they are presently a great attraction for tourists.
