Tersk Horse was first developed in 1920s and 1940s at the Tersk and Starropol studs in the northern Caucasus Mountains in Russia. They were bred mainly from Strelets Arabians which are extinct. The Strelets Arabians were bred at Strelets stud in Ukraine. Later the Strelets were produced by crossbreeding pure Arabians with that of high quality Orlov Trotter and Anglo Arabians. Again, in course of cross breeding the blood of thoroughbreds were also added resulting in the Tersk Horse.
The Tersk Horses were known for their endurance. It was proved in a 192 mile ride that every Tersk registered recorded an impressive performance. They are bold by nature and has good Arabian stride. Their athletic body is their hallmark in performing in races and in jumping. Due to their nature of being competitive they are fast and generally raced along with Arabians. Another feature is their outward appearance. Even if the Tersk Horse looks fragile and has only a thin coat, they however can cope up with any savage or bitter weather condition. This makes them good for trial riding too. The Tersk Horses have a calm temperament, intelligent brain and are quick learners. They have refined head and large expressive eyes. Their ears are of medium length and neck is muscular and highly set. They also have sloped shoulders.
The color of Tersk Horse is usually gray or white with a silvery sheen. Sometimes they may also come in chestnut color. The heights of Tersk Horses are 14.3 for mares and 15hh for stallions.
The Tersk Horses are used for flat racing, endurance, competition horse, circus horse and army horse. It has sound health and is a long lived horse. They are highly priced for their worth in race tracks and competitive sports and are exported to various countries.
